Biospheres

This video was conceived as independent part of Biospheria: An Environmental Opera, premiered in 2001 in San Diego, California. The Opera staged moments in the lives of the inhabitants of Biosphere 2, the worlds largest enclosed ecosystem built near Tucson, Arizona. The first group of scientists lived there for two years, facing soon ecological and social problems. According to most experts, the project was a huge failure. It is now a tourist attraction. Rachel Mayeri¥s animation, rather than to document this development, inscenates a surrealist narrative on the history of bio-sciences.

RAIN

ABSTINENT

RAIN doesn't drink, doesn't smoke, doesn't have sex, doesn't fullfill expectations, doesn't correspond, doesn't have to keep it's promises, changes it's opinion whenever it wants. RAIN isn't for sale, not for small sums, abhors projects, makes art always on it's own rules.
RAIN hates authorities and academic structures.
RAIN always, always works related to situations.
RAIN rejects jobs, and is the boss, at least it doesn't allow any besides itself. RAIN doesn't do research, it interprets. And creates realities, RAIN is right, because it says so.
RAIN is a bit arrogant, and square.
RAIN became heavily ill and started to think. RAIN doesn't feel well, it longs for another audience.
RAIN hates big, resounding spaces, RAIN loves sensousness. RAIN is tired, won't come back. RAIN dies, thus not to be forced to kill.

ABSTINENT

RAIN trinkt nicht, raucht nicht, hat keinen Sex, ist am liebsten allein und leise, erfüllt keine Erwartungen, entspricht nicht, muss seine Versprechen nicht halten, ändert seine Meinung, wann es will. RAIN lässt sich nicht kaufen, nicht für kleine Summen, verabscheut Projekte, macht Kunst immer nach eigenen Regeln.
RAIN hasst Autoritäten und akademische Strukturen
RAIN arbeitet immer, immer situationsbezogen.
RAIN verweigert Jobs, und ist der Boss, zumindest akzeptiert es keinen ausserdem. RAIN betreibt keine Recherchen, interpretiert selbst. Und schafft Realitäten, RAIN hat recht, weil es es sagt.
RAIN ist ein wenig arrogant und zickig.
RAIN ist an einer schweren Krankheit erkrankt und ist nachdenklich geworden. RAIN fühlt sich nicht wohl, wünscht sich ein anderes Publikum.
RAIN hasst grosse hallende Räume, RAIN liebt Sinnlichkeit. RAIN ist müde, kommt nie wieder. RAIN stirbt, um nicht morden zu müssen.

RAIN is an artist/architecture/curator group. It was founded in Los Angeles in 2000 and has since developed shows in L.A., Vienna, and Houston. RAIN recently took part the Biennial of Havana in November 2003, with the collaboration of 24 artists/architects/groups. RAIN are: Siggi Hofer, Susi Jirkuff, Lisa Schmidt-Colinet, Alex Schmoeger, Eugenio Valdes Figueroa, Florian Zeyfang.
