Selina Trepp,

Selina Trepp (*1973 in Zurich, CH) has been showing her work with message salon since 1995. Esther Eppstein (message salon) and Selina Trepp have a close professional and personal relationship based on many collaborative projects and a deep friendship.
In the US, where Selina Trepp has been living for the most part since 1996, she has collaborated with Tortoise, Fred Anderson and Hamid Drake, The Chicago Underground and others. She performs weekly with Chicago's improvised Jazzscene at a Chicago club, composing live visuals. The performance project Spectralina with her life partner Dan Bitney (Tortoise), combines live music with live video, creating cohesive videosongs. Her installations and videos have been exhibited internationally.
In 2004 Selina Trepp was awarded with the Swiss Award (Art Award from the Swiss government), in 2003 she was awarded by the city of Zurich.

Selina Trepp (*1973 in Zürich, CH) hat seit 1995 im message salon wiederholt in Projekten und Ausstellungen ihre Arbeiten gezeigt. Der message salon ist für die Künstlerin der Standpunkt in Europa. Eine enge Freundschaft und viele gemeinsame Kunstprojekte verbinden Selina Trepp und Esther Eppstein (message salon).
Seit 1996 lebt Selina Trepp in Chicago/USA. Hier hat sie als Videokünstlerin unter anderem mit den Musikern Tortoise, Fred Anderson und Hamid Drake, The Chicago Underground, kollaberiert. Selina tritt regelmässig mit Cushicle (Jeff Parker, Jason Ajemian, Nori Tanaka) in einem Chicagoer Club als "visuelles" Bandmitglied auf. Das Live- Performanceprojekt Spectralina mit ihrem Lebenspartner Dan Bitney (Tortoise), verbindet Live-Musik und Live-Videomix zu lebendigen "Videosongs". Selina Trepps Videos und Installationen werden international ausgestellt.
2004 erhielt Selina Trepp am eidgenössischen Wettbewerb für Kunst (Kunstförderpreis der schweizerischen Eidgenossenschaft) eine Auszeichnung. 2003 wurde erhielt sie ein Kunstförderpreis der Stadt Zürich.

The current space consists of an exhibitionspace and a shop. The message salon shop and videoclub sells art, multiples, publications coming out of Zurich's art- music- video- and designscene. The videoclub is an extensive collection of video-art and independant films open for viewing by the public. The shop also functions as documentation-center for the young art in Zurich and especially for art being produced within message salon exhibits. It offers the audience opportunity to browse Photos and Videos documenting the events that have taken place in the space.

message salon is part of the local artscene exhibiting mostly local artists or artists with connections to the Zurich artscene.
Esther Eppstein puts together one or two exhibition-cycles a year. Each exhibition's duration is a week and the artist has a week to install. Within a cycle, there will be an opening every two weeks. The work presented at message salon is usually produced for the exhibit. Some of the work is created in the space.

message salon tries to sell the art it exhibits. The venue finances itself with a bar and with art sales. If a show doesn't produce enough revenue, the artist has to cover part of the deficit. The city of Zurich supported message salon financially in 2001 and 2002. In 2003 Esther Eppstein recieved an award for art mediation from the federal commission for art.

In addition to running her space in Zurich Esther Eppstein has branched out internationally since 1998, creating message salon within the context of other spaces or institutions, or working within the institution as guest curator.

Der Wohnwagen wurde 2000 vom migros museum für Gegenwartskunst (Zürich) als Werk angekauft.

Esther Eppstein hat mit dem message salon seit 1998 in diversen Kunstinstitutionen und an Projekten im In- und Ausland teilgenommen.

Aktueller Standort seit 2001 : Universitätsstr. 115/117, 8006 Zürich, am Rigiplatz.
Bis Ende 2005 wird dieser Raum noch bespielt. Dann wird das Gebäude abgerissen.
Der aktuelle message salon besteht einerseits aus dem message salon Ausstellungsraum für die eingeladenen KünstlerInnen. Andererseits aus dem message salon Shop und Videoclub mit Kunstartikeln, Multiples, Publikationen aus der Zürcher Kunst- Musik- Video- Grafikszene. Der Shop ist auch Dokumentationsstelle über die junge Zürcher Kunst und den message salon im speziellen. Fotos, Videos, Dokumentationen.

Der message salon ist Teil der lokalen Kunstszene und zeigt auch vor allem Zürcher KünstlerInnen oder KünstlerInnen mit Verbindungen zur Zürcher Szene.
Esther Eppstein stellt jährlich ein bis zwei Ausstellungsprogramme zusammen, in welchen die KünstlerInnen in kurz aufeinander folgenden einwöchigen Ausstellungen ihre Arbeit präsentieren.
Das Experiment, das Entstehen von Kunst steht im Vordergrund.
Der message salon ist die Plattform, wo Kunst entsteht.
Im message salon werden Arbeiten zum Ersten Mal vorgestellt, oder entstehen erst aufgrund einer Einladung. Manche Ausstellungen sind direkt im Raum entstanden. Der message salon ist eine Künstlergalerie. Hier treffen sich KünstlerInnen und andere kreative Kräfte, hier entstehen Verbindungen, Diskussionen, Freundschaften.

Im message salon wird auch versucht, ausgestellte Kunst zu verkaufen. Der message salon kann den KünstlerInnen keine Produktionskosten bezahlen, das finanzieren die KünstlerInnen selber. Mit der Bar und dem Verkauf wird der message salon finanziert. Bei defizitären Ausstellungen übernehmen die KünstlerInnen einen Teil des Defizits. Von der Stadt Zürich hat der message salon 2001 und 2002 einen Unterstützungsbeitrag erhalten. 2003 hat Esther Eppstein von der Eidgenössischen Kunstkommission einen Preis für Kunstvermittlung erhalten.
