WORK
Åsdams contribution to
the exhibition is a video work "Come to your own"(1993),
which investigates the hypno-therapeutic possibilities of video.
In this work, the artist
appears dressed in black, sitting in an empty white room, repeating
the same phrase
endlessly. The pseudo-hypnotic phrase invites the viewer/patient
to enter a space, to
become aware of his physical presence, and eventually to "come
to his/her own".
This piece explores how affect is transmitted in conversations,
and plays with the
relationship established between viewer and video subject.

Tate
Britain, London (2000). Large installations were also featured

Nordic Pavilion during the 1999 Venice Biennial and at the Norwegian

Interferenze is the first large
group show of contemporary artists from
the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden)
organized in Italy. The exhibition is conceived on the notion
of
interference and is proposed as an occasion for revision of the
cultural
stereotypes of Scandinavia. The legendary communion with nature
has
ceased to be a primary, or even the only, source of inspiration
for many
Nordic artists. In recent years, social and psychological pressures
have
emerged and are reflected in art works which interfere with the
current
condition of the welfare State, redefining the psychology of the
individual and his/her relationship with the urban context as
well as
the natural landscape.
